macoy dubs voter registration

Macoy Dubs on registering for the first time, "Nakakahiya man aminin, but this is a clarion call for all of us."

In 2017, internet sensation Macoy Dubs made headlines for his hilarious dubbing of the movie Mean Girls that prompted the phrase, “Ganda ka?”

For three years, Macoy humors his audience by engaging them in different socio-political discourse mostly partnered with a witty banter--either through his dubs or personal videos.

Now at 27 years old, this internet superstar made a name of his own and amassed more than 80K followers on Instagram alone.

During the quarantine, he introduced a new persona in the form of Auntie Julie--the cool, calm, and collected Tita from Poveda.

Auntie Julie is a pearl-wearing progressive aunt who tickled a good number of people because of charms, her familiarity with Grindr, and her acceptance for her gay son Bert.

Aside from all these, Aunt Julie is also engaged in political conversations like Macoy when she encouraged Bert to register for the upcoming elections.

Auntie Julie cheers for her daughter Cassandra. She also has a reminder for all of us. Hehe hoho Love and Light, #AuntieJulie

Now that Macoy has everyone's attention, he spoke with GMANetwork.com about his collaboration with the non-partisan community We The Youth Vote and how it's not too late for people of his age to register to vote for the upcoming elections.

GMANetwork.com: In your opinion how crucial is it for the youth to register for the coming elections?

Macoy: "I'm 27 years old and nakakahiya man aminin, hindi pa ako registered voter.

"I mean, napagdaanan ko na two to three terms of presidency and maybe apat na senatorial elections.

"But, admittedly nakakahiya at nakakalungkot na hindi pa ako registered.

"So, this is a clarion call to every single one of us, especially sa mga age range din namin.

"Kasi, marami rin pa talaga na Millenials aged 25 to 32 years old ang hindi pa rin nakakapagregister because of many factors.

"Siguro unang factor na pwede nating mabanggit is nahihiya sila na para bang pagka sinasabi nila na boboto sila pa-woke o chismis lang yan o eme-eme lang 'yan.

"Number two, kaya hindi sila nag-register as a voter is because meron silang thinking wala na silang pag-asa na kahit ano pang boto nila ay walang factor.

"Walang 'x' factor na mangyayari para sa ikagaganda ng ating bansa.

"Itong ganito na We The Youth Vote is a clarion call for the age range tulad ko na this is the proper timing.

"Most probably because we are expecting about 40 million people ang magre-register for the coming elections.

Who Are We? We The Youth Vote envisions an empowered Filipino Youth that will collectively shape our country's future. 🇵🇭 It all starts with one vote 🗳

G: What creative ways can you do to encourage the public to register despite the pandemic?

M: "Maraming creative ways! Kaya, I commend the content of Yani Villarosa and Dora Dorado for activating the critical thinking of their followers most especially during this time na halos lahat frustrated sa mga nangyayari.

"I guess, the content na ginagawa nila is one of the creative ways of educating their followers and letting them know na hindi puwedeng hari-hari lang. Harry Potter o Harry Styles? Haha! Ganon!

G: How would you persuade a healthy political discourse among your peers?

M: "Alam mo, napaka-diverse ng usapin when it comes to politics lalo na 'pag hindi kayo magkamukha ng ideologies.

"To have a healthy conversation about politics it's really important to set aside personal issues.

"Parang feeling ko there is a quadrant between personal and the political.

"Ang nangyayari kasi kaya nagkakaroon ng conflict 'yung dalawang parties because nasasama 'yung personal.

"In my experience kasi, I have friends who are supporters of the two popular political groups.

"But for me, I'm more on the neutral side. Kahit naman nung college ako, pumoprotesta rin ako about the PDAF scam, pork-barrel, at sa SAF 44.

"I guess in terms of promoting healthy conversations about politics, it's more of setting aside personal issues and in all fairness, kahit mayroon akong friends who are supporters of Duterte na willing makinig.

"Ang importante naman kasi is if you listen to them first and then kung makipag-argue sila then, you let them.

"But, it's much better if you play the bigger person and be the one who's listening first. Kasi, [kapag] ganun ibabalik din nila 'yung respeto sa'yo.

Missing my days when I was still in Letran. Hayyyy!

G: How do you become a responsible content creator when talking about politics in social media?

M: "Well, kung ikaw ay isang responsible content creator, and if ikaw ay nag-e-engage sa political talk, it's very important that you activate the critical thinking of your followers wherein you let them relate and ipamulat sa kanila ang mga nangyayari ngayon.

"That's why I'm very sarcastic sa inilalabas nating content.

"Kumbaga hindi diretsong patama pero merong hugot. You know that it pertains to an entity.

"Tulad ng ginagawa namin nina Dora and Yani, hindi lang siya patawa, e.

"Ako kasi sa mga ginagawa ko, dinadgadagan ko ng humor kasi it's the easiest way to capture the attention of your followers. 'Yun kasi 'yung madali, e, komedya. And then you put the satire there.

"That's why sa mga content creator out there who's not really into politics, if that's their choice, then okay.

"But in this kind of situation that we're in, you should educate your followers to vote and this is the time to speak up na.

"Okay lang if you don't speak up about the other issues but speak up about the voting kasi this is the time na, 'di ba?

"In conclusion, being a responsible content creator is about educating your followers and hindi puro paganda ka lang.

Sorry for the late response, nag file lang kami. Tnx! #COCBlockTheTerrorLaw #Patria
